This section contains some pictures from my family archives. My father was an expert in far eastern labor affairs who became a foreign service officer. His parents were Finnish immigrants and socialists. My mother's parents were Russian Jewish intellectuals; her mother was an anarchist, her father a research chemist and an expert in air and water pollution. She taught high school French and English, then became an environmental activist. Both my parents were very, very bright; they were multilingual, widely read, and curious. They gave me a lot and I miss them very much.
When I started this website and put up the photograph section, my mother had just died and I was working on "Going Home;" I was caught up in family stories and family histories, and I gathered photographs that would underscore some of the music I was writing. Time has passed, as it always does, and I have–to my amazement–a new family. Come inside to meet my wife Robin and our twin boys, Kalevi and Daniel Kaukonen.
My mother's father gave me my first guitar on my fifteenth birthday. He always regretted it. Maybe he was right. Here are performance shots through the years. One of these days I'll get around to adding some bicycling pictures, too.
